Adelaide vs. Collingwood
Thursday, September 4 – Adelaide Oval
Jimmy’s Prediction: Adelaide by 32
To start of Week 1 of Finals – I think this might actually be the dullest affair.
The Pies have the 13th worst Win-Loss ratio in the past 6 games, with 2 wins, to 4 losses. Behind Sydney, Saints and even Carlton – Which is woeful coming into finals. And their last most recent win against 14th placed Melbourne by a goal was hardly convincing.
Not to be a broken record, but it’s a long season and I can barely back up two runs in a month. It’s fair to assume the old boys legs at Collingwood are struggling more each week.
This is a bit of a danger game for Adelaide. Not in the sense that they will lose, but on the contrary. If they win against a tired, old Collingwood outfit and stroll straight into the Prelim – their complacency issue will hit a new high.
They only just beat the Pies less than a month ago, and the other two teams they’ve beat recently are North and West Coast- neither were convincing for a top of the ladder v bottom of the ladder.
All in all, I think Adelaide will be way too strong – but they might already be getting ahead of themselves and I wouldn’t be surprised if the maturity and resilience of Collingwood snatched it at the right time. And, I think it’d be the best thing for them.
Adelaide comfortably, if they have a crack.

Geelong vs. Brisbane
Friday, September 5 – MCG
Jimmy’s Prediction: Brisbane by 17
I’m tipping that the 2022 and 2024 premiers here respectively, will be the ones in the last dance.
The Cattery love lingering up the top of the ladder and in finals, and this year is no exception. While Jezza has notably slowed down in the last few games, the rest of the team is still flying – especially big Neale picking up the slack in front of the sticks, and Holmes/Smith have been dynamic in the guts.
They have been smacking the crap out of the lower ranked teams, the way Adelaide should have, but didn’t.
Brisbane are arguably the most talented team, yet also have the ability to not show up. They’ve been pretty average at home of late, so they’ll be quite content with some early G exposure prior to the possible Granny.
The Lions are coming into finals with some form, off the back of beating the Hawks in battle of the top 4 – and have won their last 3 games against top 8 sides.
Although both sides are no strangers to finals, I think Brisbanes midfield depth will get them across the line.
Lions in a belter.

GWS vs. Hawthorn
Saturday, September 6 – ENGIE Stadium
Jimmy’s Prediction: GWS by 2
After just missing out on a top 4 place and now dropped to 8th – the Hawks will be doing everything to stay alive in the finals race. Will Day has proven to be a massive loss for the Hawks, and without him they’ve been far from Hollywood status.
While Hawthorn have had alright momentum coming into finals, what with bashing Collingwood at the G – the only other times they’ve beaten top 8 teams this year, has been in Tasmania.
The Giants have also had a rather inconsistent year, but one thing is for certain – they love playing the good teams. Their main kryptonite is the Western Bulldogs, so they would’ve been pretty happy with their Queensland counterpart Gold Coast for not crapping the mattress.
GWS have a few important pieces missing that they’ll want to have back to be in full strength, including Jesse Hogan and the package. Even without their studs, others are popping up in their place to try keep their spots in the finals.
If GWS are close to full strength, I’m backing them – but I don’t expect the Hawks to roll over and let them have it. I just expect GWS to handle the pressure better.
Giants by nothing.

Fremantle vs. Gold Coast
Saturday, September 6 – Optus Stadium
Jimmy’s Prediction: Fremantle by 13
The first final in Western Australia since 2022. It’s been a minute, and the footy loving state will love to see it. Freo have been a good success story this year, high expectations, slow start and quietly achieved their place on the fringe of the ladder, before ending the Dogs season with authority. The Dogs had the talent, but Freo looked hungrier, harder and more powerful – absolutely earning their spot.
Gold Coast were never a chance to miss out, but the little slip up against Port is not easily forgiven. As the Suns last year were famously unbeatable at home, and unloseably away from it – they’ve done well to shake that fact this year, for better or for worse.
And with losing a couple of sitters away this year (Port and Richmond) – faith is diminishing for them to grow up and win in the hardest place against a strong Fremantle outfit, on the complete other side of the country.
As we’ve seen in the All-Australian, the Suns are not shy of some absolute game winning jets with Rowell, Anderson and King. But as we all know, jets can sometimes stall, especially in Perth downdrafts.
Overall, I think Gold Coast have the better team, but more would have to go right for them to win – and they haven’t been that reliable.
Freo by a few.
