After many seasons from hell, Dons and Blues supporters especially want to put this one behind us. And how good that we all get to enjoy it on a Thursday night. Unelite skills aside, the young Essendon players have made the most of their opportunities in the big league, having a crack and being competitive – which is all we can ask for.
The Blues still have a fistful of jets, who absolutely went to work on Port last week and registered their third biggest win of the year, with McKay showing how he won a Coleman a few years back.
I’m sure the Dons would love to end the season on a high and upset the old foe, but Carlton still have the talent to keep them at bay.

Jimmy’s Prediction: Collingwood by 17
We’re very top heavy of ordinary games this week, and unfortunately this potential upset won’t rock the league too much.
The Dees have been in shambles all year, but after sacking the coach with a few weeks to go – they haven’t fumbled much worse. Although they never looked in it against Hawthorn, the Demons had a very commendable crack the week prior, and almost upset the Dogs.
Collingwood have been on a very public slide out of the top of the ladder, but redeemed their position in a very close hit out against Adelaide. Although the Pies have dropped their last 3, they were all top 5 teams – and Adelaide could’ve went either way.
While Melbourne have the talent to upset the Pies here, I don’t think Collingwood can be losing for this long in a row. They’ll get the job done and just retain their spot in the 4.

Jimmy’s Prediction: Gold Coast by 11
Luckily the Suns have an almost certain 4 points up their sleeve, because they’re seconds away from fumbling finals.
To be fair, losing to GWS is hardly a significant concern – considering the Giants are actually Giant killers, and have beaten the most top teams. However, the smashing of 35 points in the Suns so called fortress, is an issue.
Although Port have shown at times (very, very few) that they can match it with the best this year – last weeks bollocking from the Blues would have the Suns breathing a bit easier.
Port will want to send Ken off in good fashion with a win, and at home two weeks prior they almost took a Fremantle scalp. But after last week, the Suns have too much on the line to bottle it now.

Jimmy’s Prediction: Adelaide by 22
The Crows are laughing their way into a home and safe final, and will probably see this hit out as some target practise.
However. Adelaide are getting a bit complacent at the minute, and only just got home against the cold pies last week – and worse, was nearly getting done by the bottom of the ladder West Coast.
The Roos are saying goodbye to another forgettable season, but had an all time party session last week with a smashing against the Tiges and a lazy 141 combined disposals for their starting 4 in the guts.
If I was an Adelaide supporter, I’d almost want to lose this one and get an almighty wake up and get rid of any complacency come finals. But losing to Kangaroos probably isn’t even in their DNA – and they definitely won’t want that to end their best season in decades.
Adelaide, but careful of a potential upset.

The last home and away Saturday of season 2025, is looking less super by the minute.
The Tiges have done more than anyone expected this year, notching up 5 wins and even derailed a potential top 4 side. They’re happy with how their season went considering.
Geelong are also laughing their way into a home final, and if Adelaide drop the ball they’ll likely take the top spot. With all eyes on Jeremy Cameron kicking bags of late, the opposing teams all don’t want to have a bar of him hitting the tonne – but have forgotten to actually try and win.
The Cats will probably focus less on Jez now, and more on winning – which ironically will probably see him kick 10.

West Coast vs. Sydney

Jimmy’s Prediction: Sydney by 37
The 2005 Grand Final rematch will most likely have the same result – and probably the same amount of goals.
After the Swans thought they’d make a late surge for finals and were exited equally as quickly, they’ve come to terms with their season. They never looked a chance against Geelong last week, but they did upset the Lions the week prior – so that revenge is enough to let them put 2025 behind them.
West Coast on the other hand, are probably looking forward to putting the entire 20s behind them – and fast forward to 2030 when they might be good again. After an almost upset against Adelaide 2 weeks ago, the big bully Bulldogs gave them an absolute wedgie at Marvel, and buried them by almost 100.
Both teams are probably busy planning out their Mad Monday, but the Swans will still happily take the opportunity to put some respect on their end of season position.

Jimmy’s Prediction: GWS by 48
Besides the absolute belting GWS received from the Bulldogs – they were arguably the best poised team coming into the finals, beating Brisbane, Gold Coast, Geelong and Gold Coast again in the past two months.
Although, an 88 point loss is hard to look past, but beating the Suns up there is a rare achievement. Plus, with Rowston and Gruzewski stepping up as more players who can kick bags in Hogans absence – there are some good signs at the West side of town.
The Saints have won four in a row and are carrying on like they won back to back flags. I’m not sure if they are aware that the four teams that they have beaten are positioned 14-18, but good for them.
However, the Saints trip in fairy land will come to an end when they come up against an actual team.
Saints, get to higher ground. GWS to drown them.

Jimmy’s Prediction: Bulldogs by 45
Here it is. The most important individual game of the round – and probably all year. It’s looking very likely two years in a row of Flopmantle, rather than Finalsmantle.
The Dockers have had two chances at a must-win, and completely bottled the first (and probably easier option) last week, when they got done by almost 10 goals by Brisbane – in Perth.
However, the big bad Bulldogs’ kryptonite is simple – teams in the top 9 that aren’t GWS. Besides the Giants, they’re yet to beat any other team (that isn’t poo).
Going by current form, the location of this game, and the fact that Bulldogs’ incredible list is all playing to the best of their ability – I think it’s pretty safe to assume that Flopmantle is quickly turning into the new Colliwobbles.

While there is less on the line for this game than the previous one – this closing match of the week will be match of the round.
The Hawks absolutely binned Collingwood, and then beat the Dees comfortably last week to solidify their spot in finals. While the pressure is off though, this will be a good test to see how they will handle the heat of a top 4 team – away from home.
Brisbane must hate their fans, as they’ve been having better wins away than at the Gabba. Still, after getting upset by Sydney a few weeks ago – it was scary to see how good they are when they turn it on in the last few minutes. That was probably the wake up they needed on the eve of finals, as they played with absolute heart last week, when they ended Freos season.
Should be a bloody good one, but I’m backing the Lions to send the straight to Hulu Hawks into finals with an upset feeling (and maybe a fire) in their belly.

In no world do Essendon have any right to winning this game. And let’s be honest, it’s a very very long shot.
12 losses in a row for the Dons, however the Essendon edge has been edging closer to a win for weeks now – keeping all us Dons fans edging on the edge of our seat.
The sensible thing to do would be to go up the Gold Coast, get rolled over, try not to accumulate any more injuries for next year and enjoy the beers on Cavill Avenue – but common sense and Essendon have a strained relationship. The Dons have decided to put some of their best, half returning from injury, players in – instead of putting them on ice.
Essendon still remember vividly Mac Andrew kicking a goal after the siren, to really put the final nail in the finals coffin last year. I mean, they still would’ve missed out by 2 points, but they had two more games to go. Brad Scott will surely be pumping up the boys to go as hard as possible, make the Suns earn their finals spot – and possibly ruin it for them.
While Peoples First Stadium is generally a fortress for the Suns – they have lost 2 games in recent months up there, including their very last game there.
There is a tonne on the line for Gold Coast right now, and if the wheels come off early and Essendon strike at the right time – it could be chaos. Gold Coast also lost to Richmond this year, so they’re not immune to getting beat by a team like Essendon.
