The Bulldogs hung around with North Melbourne early before the usual happened and the Kangaroos eventually took over. It was their first real reality check of the season, but the Dogs have still shown plenty of good signs.

Sydney keeps getting the job done. The Swans weren’t brilliant against St Kilda, but they worked through a scrappy game and found another way to win.

Whitten Oval makes this tricky, but Sydney has looked slightly better across the ground and gets the nod.

St Kilda was much better against Sydney than it was during the Geelong disaster, but the Saints still made scoring look painfully difficult.

North Melbourne just keeps doing ridiculous North Melbourne things. The Bulldogs gave them a decent challenge early before the Roos put the foot down and took control.

The Saints can make this ugly for a while, but North should eventually flog them.

Port Adelaide very nearly made hard work of GWS before just sneaking home. It wasn’t convincing, but after getting run over by Hawthorn the week before they will happily take the win.

Gold Coast backed up its huge improvement against West Coast with another really encouraging performance against Geelong. The Suns couldn’t quite get the job done, but this young side suddenly looks dangerous.

This is much closer than it looked before the season. Alberton gets Port the nod, but Gold Coast is absolutely capable of pinching it.

Brisbane probably wants to throw the Melbourne game directly into the bin. The Lions were absolutely belted and looked nothing like the side that pushed North Melbourne all the way a week earlier.

GWS nearly pulled off another upset against Port and continues to look considerably less woeful than last year. They are playing with much more confidence and making good teams work for their wins.

Still, Brisbane at home coming off a flogging feels dangerous. Expect an angry response from the Lions.

Richmond had to work ridiculously hard for its win over Essendon, finally getting its nose in front late after chasing the Bombers for most of the night.

Fremantle also came out of a close one, falling just short against Carlton after giving the Blues a massive scare in Perth. The Dockers’ pressure looked much better, although scoring can still become hard work.

This looks like a genuine coin flip. Home ground gets Jimmy onto Richmond, while The Machine can jump the other way.

Hawthorn looks to have properly woken up. The Hawks followed their huge second half against Port by getting the job done against Collingwood and are starting to build some momentum.

Adelaide finally got a much-needed win against West Coast. The Crows still don’t look like the powerhouse of years gone by, but there is enough quality there to trouble anyone when they get moving.

Hawthorn has more firepower at the moment and should keep the good form rolling.

Geelong’s opening-round hiding suddenly feels a long time ago. The Cats smashed St Kilda and then backed it up by getting through a much tougher battle against an improving Gold Coast side.

Essendon came painfully close to finally breaking through against Richmond. The Bombers led for most of the night before getting pinched late, which pretty much sums up how things are going for them.

GMHBA Stadium is a nasty place to visit when Geelong is playing well. The Cats should be too strong.

Carlton had to fight for it in Perth but eventually just snuck past Fremantle. It wasn’t their prettiest performance, although finding a way to win a game like that is probably another good sign.

Collingwood has been pretty woeful so far. There have been little patches where the Pies look competitive, but scoring remains a massive problem and Hawthorn was another opponent with too much class.

Back at IKON Park, Carlton should have far too much firepower.

West Coast was a little better against Adelaide, but the Eagles are still struggling to get things going and now get rewarded with Melbourne. Lovely.

The Demons were absolutely frightening against Brisbane. They smashed one of the competition’s best sides and their midfield is currently tearing teams apart.

Travelling to Perth is about the only thing giving West Coast much hope here. Melbourne should be far too good.
