Roosters vs Bulldogs

Thursday, September 10 – Allianz Stadium

The Roosters are still perfect and showed absolutely no mercy to North Queensland last week. They had the game buried by halftime and cruised through the rest, making it ten straight wins and continuing what has been a ridiculous regular season.

Canterbury have completely fallen apart after that brief patch of decent football in the middle of the year. The Tigers gave them a hiding, then Newcastle did much the same thing last week. Their defence simply isn’t holding up against the better attacking sides.

This is comfortably the biggest mismatch of the round. The Bulldogs would need the Roosters to have one eye firmly on the finals to even make it interesting.

Wests Tigers vs Raiders

Friday, September 11 – Leichhardt Oval

The Tigers went from one of the stories of the season to getting absolutely obliterated by Gold Coast. The 58-0 loss was the biggest defeat in club history, and to make matters worse Kezie Apps and Faythe Manera both went off injured. They have already secured finals football, but that was a horrible way to enter the last round.

Canberra somehow managed to lose to Parramatta despite spending huge chunks of the game attacking the Eels line. They fought back to level it late, then Rachael Pearson pinched it with a field goal after the siren. Now the equation is simple enough: beat the Tigers and Canberra secure their first finals appearance.

Wests are much better than what they produced last week, but Canberra have considerably more on the line and I expect them to respond.

Eels vs Cowboys

Saturday, September 12 – CommBank Stadium

Parramatta’s strange little late-season revival continues. After wins over Canterbury and Cronulla, they bounced back from the Brisbane flogging by knocking over Canberra in one of their best defensive performances of the season. Three wins from four after starting the year horribly is a decent turnaround.

North Queensland have gone backwards again. Their mid-season run briefly had them looking dangerous, but Newcastle pumped them before the Roosters absolutely tore them apart last week. Running into the Roosters is hardly a fair diagnostic test for any rugby league side, but the Cowboys have definitely lost momentum.

Parramatta are finishing the season with a bit of life and get this one at home. I like them to make it four wins from five.

Sharks vs Dragons

Saturday, September 12 – Ocean Protect Stadium

Cronulla finally had something to smile about last week, going across to New Zealand and knocking over the Warriors for just their second win of the season. Getting some experienced players back made a noticeable difference and their attack looked far more dangerous than it has for most of the year.

The Dragons couldn’t make it back-to-back wins against Brisbane, but they certainly weren’t terrible. They kept competing, made plenty of metres through the middle and had enough opportunities to make the Broncos uncomfortable, they just couldn’t finish their work.

Two struggling sides who have both improved late in the year. Cronulla have slightly more strike, but this feels like one where absolutely anything could happen.

Broncos vs Warriors

Sunday, September 13 – Totally Workwear Stadium

Brisbane have steadied themselves nicely after that ugly three-game losing streak. They backed up the Parramatta demolition with another win over the Dragons, and Tamika Upton was ridiculous again with a try, four line breaks and two try assists. The Broncos suddenly look dangerous again heading towards the finals.

The Warriors are heading the other way. Losing to Cronulla made it four straight defeats and has basically torched what once looked like a comfortable finals campaign. Their attack can still put points on, but they are leaking far too many themselves.

Back in Brisbane with Upton flying and the spine looking settled again, I can’t see the Warriors stopping them often enough.

Knights vs Titans

Sunday, September 13 – McDonald Jones Stadium

Newcastle have picked a pretty good time to wake up. After losing three straight they have now belted the Cowboys and Bulldogs in consecutive weeks, with their attack suddenly looking as dangerous as it did earlier in the season. Tayla Predebon even managed a hat-trick from prop last week, which is usually a decent indication that the opposition had stopped having a pleasant afternoon.

Gold Coast are somehow getting better. They made it nine straight by completely destroying the Tigers 58-0, their biggest win as an NRLW club. Jaime Chapman grabbed a first-half hat-trick and they continued piling on points even after Teagan Levi went off.

The big problem is Levi will definitely miss this game after her Category 1 head knock. The Titans proved they have enough depth to cover her, but Newcastle away is a far harder assignment than a Tigers side that had completely collapsed. This is the game of the round for me.
