Hawthorn vs. Collingwood
Thursday, August 7 – MCG
Jimmy’s Prediction: Hawthorn by 9
We’re peaking early with the games this weekend, as this is the only top 8 v top 8 hit out – or game with the favourite paying over 1.30.
Very important for the Hawks to nail this one, or their season may be in the loo. After losing their first test last week against the Crows, they still have this game and Brisbane – and will have to win one of them.
The Pies are losing form at the worst possible time, and have only won 2 games out of their last 5. While it’s pretty unlikely, if they lose every game from here and Hawthorn win all theirs – the Pies could miss the 8.
The Pies aren’t in as dire situation as the Hawks, and Hawthorn did put up a much better effort last week than Collingwood. In this battle of the birds, I’m backing the Hawks to keep their season alive – and breathing possibility into the Colliwobbles missing the 8.
Hawks in a close one.

Geelong vs. Essendon
Friday, August 8 – GMHBA Stadium
Jimmy’s Prediction: Geelong by 80
This game could be really good due to the fact that Geelong will get extremely close to putting Essendon out of their misery for good. However, they won’t go that far, but it’ll still be a massive bloodbath.
The Dons actually had a decent dip up against the Swans last week – beckoning the question if it was due to the terrible conditions, or if they play better outside of prime time. Regardless, they’ll have all eyes on them Friday and no weather to save them from a walloping.
The Cats are on a rampage to A/ get their percentage the highest come September, and B/ get Jezza his 100th goal this season. They wouldn’t even have to worry about winning as it’s just expected.
Geelong to annihilate them.

Richmond vs. St Kilda
Saturday, August 9 – MCG
Jimmy’s Prediction: Saints by 34
Some of these end of season games make footy hard to love. The Saints must still have a rabbits foot somewhere in their possession, after holding on to a win after a gutsy comeback from the North.
The Tiges are still battered and bruised emotionally after taking part in one of the four 80+ point bashings last week up in Gold Coast.
Both teams and supporter bases are well and truly just waiting for 2026, although the Saints are still riding the high of the Miracle at Marvel 2 weeks ago. They still enjoy the taste of success.
Saints comfortably.

Brisbane vs. Sydney
Saturday, August 9 – Gabba
Jimmy’s Prediction: Brisbane by 47
The Lions came down to the colosseum and received justice for the 2023 Grand Final against the Pies. Morris really stepping up to the pressure with a lazy 6, and really fitting into the Joe Daniher sized boots.
Sydney’s finals hopes are well and truly gone, and by right after only a narrow win against the understaffed Dons last week. In average conditions, the goal/behind count was laughable, but Sydney’s stars in Grundy, Heeney and Errol kept them alive as usual.
The Lions still haven’t got it all fully figured out, but are still getting more and more dangerous come September. With Sydney’s morale hitting the dumps, this is an opportunity to beat a half decent team senseless and prepare for September.
Brisbane to smack them.

Carlton vs. Gold Coast
Saturday, August 9 – Marvel Stadium
Jimmy’s Prediction: Gold Coast by 25
While there has been little to celebrate in the Blues camp lately (or longly) – upsetting a team’s finals opportunity would brighten the Carlton faithful, in making others feel as blue as them. They almost achieved this feat last week against Freo over in Perth, but let it slip in the last quarter.
The Suns have a safe next few weeks to stay finals bound, with an extra game up their sleeve against the Dons. However, slipping this one would still be very dangerous given the tightness of spots 4-9.
I can definitely see Carlton having it in them to ruin, or disrupt, Gold Coasts season – and the two games after this are pointless (Essendon and Port). Still, at this stage I cannot see Carlton having some misplaced anger, triumphing Gold Coasts Road to finals.
Suns, but be careful down here.

Port Adelaide vs. Fremantle
Saturday, August 9 – Adelaide Oval
Jimmy’s Prediction: Fremantle by 38
Speaking of potential season ruiners, heres Ports opportunity. This week we’ve got one top 9 v top 9 game, one bottom 9 v bottom 9 – and the rest are good team v bad team. So plenty of possible finals ruining stories. But can Port dish it up?
Unlikely. The Power were good against Geelong for half the game last week, but ended up getting flogged by 88 points – the equal biggest margin last week. Their midfield is usually fast and exciting, but they are missing quite a few of their studs – and Butters just isn’t picking up their slack.
Flagmantle argument was becoming stronger each week, but nearly losing to Carlton at Perth means it should be reassessed. They’re four in a row at the minute, and every team gets complacent around this time on a streak. Instead of losing to Port, surely a near miss against Carlton will be enough to make them turn up the heat.
Fremantle by a bit.

GWS vs. North Melbourne
Sunday, August 10 – Corroboree Group Oval
Jimmy’s Prediction: GWS by 19
Out of the 7 potential upsets, this one is my second favourite. The Giants have been super volatile all year, beating good teams, losing to average teams and getting dog walked by Bulldogs twice. An 88 point loss a month from finals is not good for morale.
North haven’t had much to be happy, or proud, about in years – except for a few standout upsets, and many very close upsets. They’ve got the most exciting up and coming list and would be absolutely steaming after almost stealing the W off the Saints last week.
Still, the Kangaroos still seem to have too many cooks in the kitchen, and not enough around the entire ground. With Toby Greene back and there being too much on the line for the Giants, I think they’ll keep alive for another week.
GWS in a dangerous one.

Melbourne vs. Western Bulldogs
Sunday, August 10 – MCG
Jimmy’s Prediction: Bulldogs by 42
Here’s my favourite possible upset for the year. Even though I’ve been backing the Bulldogs for months as my AFL Premiership Tip – Melbourne might be a bogey team for them.
The Dees returned to the scene of the crime, and actually showed up this time, and spanked West Coast after getting humiliated by St Kilda with the biggest 3 quarter fumble of all time only a week prior. While they haven’t been dangerous all year, they came close against Adelaide, Collingwood, Brisbane and Gold Coast – and they beat Freo.
The Dogs are peaking at the right time, and although their back line is as worrying as Adelaide’s was at the start of the year – their forward line is looking scarier than Adelaides, with Naughton and Darcy both playing like two Gary Ablett Seniors.
The Dogs definitely have the arsenal to send Melbourne on their way, but it’ll be interesting to see if the 2021 Grand Final still haunts them in anyway.
Bulldogs to flog them and be legit – but there’s always a concern.

West Coast vs. Adelaide
Sunday, August 11 – Optus Stadium
Jimmy’s Prediction: Adelaide by 85
Yes. What a game to end the week of boring AF games with 1 v 18. The Crows are taking no prisoners at the minute and are the clear favourite to take home the flag. Every week they’ve got 3-5 of about 10 players who will stand up and play a blinder – and like random clockwork the next 3-5 will do the same the week after – making it impossible for opposition teams to target.
The Eagles have lost their cash cow Harley Reid and probably the only thing interesting in watching their games – although half of Perth will tell me otherwise. I would say you’ve only got 3 games left to suffer through, but they seem to love going to the games regardless. After getting steam rolled by Melbourne, you can’t even imagine the Eagles having a chance of getting close to this game.
Adelaide by an absurd amount.
