GWS vs. Western Bulldogs

Thursday, July 31 – Marvel Stadium

Jimmy’s Prediction: Bulldogs by 12

Finally, a Thursday night game that won’t be a blowout. It’s been a minute. Even after the demolition of Essendon, the Doggies are sitting on the wrong side of the 8 and are 8 points away from each of the other teams (counting Gold Coast as they’ve got another easy 4 points backed up in the Essendon match they missed). The Dogs will have to win this one to stay in the race.

GWS have a bit of breathing room after a come-from-behind turned into a belting of the reigning Grand Finalists last week. Although they are missing their skipper Toby after he decided to go full Toby for a bit there last week.

They have a good hit out these two teams, but the Dogs usually have their measure (the only top team they do) and they have way too much on the line. Plus it’s at Marvel.

Doggies to cling on to finals.

Adelaide vs. Hawthorn

Friday, August 1 – Adelaide Oval

Jimmy’s Prediction: Adelaide by 17

Yes! They’ve finally got the prime time fixtures right. The Bollywood Hok are showing signs of being A-listers again, but only a 4 goal win against Carlton doesn’t give them that status. They’ve actually been pretty rancid the last month, losing to Freo, and only beating Carlton, Port and the Saints by nothing convincing.

Radelaide are incredibly dangerous at the minute, after flogging the cross town rivals by almost 100 in the pouring rain, with all their hot forwards consistently sharing in goals.

The Crows mean business coming into finals and they must be guzzling milk as their injury list is almost nonexistent.

Crows to get it done easily enough.

Melbourne vs. West Coast Eagles

Saturday, August 2 – Marvel Stadium

Jimmy’s Prediction: Melbourne by 20

Like 7 other teams, these two are well and truly checked out. The Eagles normally put on a good fight against their cross town rival – however they just rolled over and took it by the Dockers this week.

The Dees have looked good at times throughout the year, but boy they’ve looked average in the last few weeks. Losing to Carlton was one thing, but giving up a 46 point lead at 3/4 to lose was woeful.

I’m backing the Dees for the reason that their season couldn’t possibly get any worse, and there’s no reason for them to tank as Essendon get their pick.

Gold Coast vs. Richmond

Saturday, August 2 – People First Stadium

Jimmy’s Prediction: Gold Coast by 38

After the Suns defecated their mattress earlier in the year against the Tiges, they’ll be wanting to redeem this blemish on their season in a big way.

Whether they’re the real deal or not, opinions change weekly on the Suns due to their volatile behaviour – this game will surely just be another stepping stone to their first finals campaign.

The Tiges put up a good fight against the top of the ladder Pies last week, and were two on the trot prior. No one’s expecting them to do much this year and they’ve already done more than they should. It’s quite obvious their snap rebuild is going to be successful quick.

But that’s in the future. As for now, the Suns will belt them.

Jimmy’s Tips:

Gold Coast to Win

Sydney vs. Essendon

Saturday, August 2 – SCG

Jimmy’s Prediction: Sydney by 37

While it was fun for a few weeks to think the Swans could’ve made the 8 – now they’re just going to contribute to another uninspiring and irrelevant game each week. None more so than this one.

Sydney looked like they had it tied up at half time last week after leading the Giants by 28 at the main break. However, the very orange and “non-offensive” banner must’ve had a delayed mesmerising effect, because they literally turned into witches hats after halftime.

The Dons on the other hand, decided to look like witches hats the entire game. It was always going to be a bloodbath as the Dogs love to bully the small teams, but even for Essendon’s standards that was bad.

Swans will probably have a dip in this game, thinking if they play good footy they might be granted finals. However Dons are just dying to have this season end.

Swans to flog them.

Collingwood vs. Brisbane

Saturday, August 2 – MCG

Jimmy’s Prediction: Brisbane by 10

Three great night games in a row! The grand final rematch from 2023 will be an interesting hit out that’s for sure.

Some say (myself especially) that the Pies and their old legs are starting to struggle at the latter end of their season. And the fact they lost 2 of their last 3 games, and only narrowly beat Richmond (for Richmond standards) pretty much confirms this.

The Lions had been on a bit of a warpath with a 4 game streak, but got seriously derailed by the younger brother in the QClash last week. They’re having serious issues up forward with Hipwood and Cameron being checked out, that young gun Morris is their leading goal kicker – who is ranked the 18th highest goal kicker in the league. Which is absurd for a 3rd ranked club.

I’ve got red flags on both these teams at the minute, but last week was more of a blip for Brisbane. Collingwood seem to be beginning to spiral.

Brisbane by a few.

St Kilda vs. North Melbourne

Sunday, August 3 – Marvel Stadium

Jimmy’s Prediction: Saints by 23

Speaking of irrelevant games, after what the Saints did to Melbourne last week proves that there is still some excitement to be had in these hit outs. Although they were stinky for 3/4 of the game, coming back to win from the biggest deficit at 3/4 time is the highlight of their decade.

North copped some heat for not tanking a few years ago and missing out on Harley Reid – lately it seems like they’ve regretted that decision and are playing for the draft. At times throughout the year they’ve shown great promise, but a 101 point flogging from Geelong last week is the opposite to that.

If North can get Larkey back I might change my mind slightly, but Saints just proved they always give it 100%, and they’re desperate to be off the easy beat list.

Saints, to prove a point to us and themselves.

Geelong vs. Port Adelaide

Sunday, August 3 – GMHBA Stadium

Jimmy’s Prediction: Geelong by 49

I feel like this game happens 4x a year, and that both teams always win when they are playing away.

However, it’s hard to breathe much life into my tinfoil hat theory with Ports current form. They were abysmal last week in Kens last showdown, getting done by 98 points, in weather so bad that it should’ve had a total score of 80.

The Cats are laughing their way into finals with 4 super easy games, and after Jezza dropped a lazy 11 last week – there’s a very real chance he’ll slot 100.

Can only see this game going one way, and BZT is the perfect man to get Jezza up into the 80s.

Geelong to kill them.

Geelong to Win

Fremantle vs. Carlton

Sunday, August 3 – Optus Stadium

Jimmy’s Prediction: Fremantle by 33

The Dockers are officially the kings of all Australia now. After belting their older brother in West Coast last week, they’ve taken the WA crown – and in Melbourne we all still remember the Collingwood game the week prior.

The Blues on the other hand, who have been the jesters of all of Australia all year now – are now granted villain status after not giving Doc a win for his send off game.

Most talk coming out Carlton at the minute is where the players want to trade to. While Freo are seriously shaping up to earn their first flag.

Fremantle to smash them.

Jimmy’s Tips:

Fremantle to Win
