Bulldogs vs Sydney
The Dogs have been found out in the last few weeks, and look a mere shadow of what they were a few weeks ago. The absolute bollocking the Cats handed them last week has given everyone the blueprint to beat them. Tag the Bont. Shocker, I know.
Speaking of bollocking, Sydney were the only team to show up in NSW last week when the little brother made their way across town just to get spanked. And Charlie finally figuring out which sticks are which is a bad sign for the rest of the league.
The Dogs will bounce back a bit at home, but Darcy being gone is a huge blow up forward and Naughton needs to lift. Sydney seem to be getting it done everywhere, and should be fine in the inoffensive Marvel.
Richmond vs Melbourne
The Tiges rebuild seems like it will take as much time as you’d expect. Although at times they’ve shown some ticker, last week they endured the business end of one of the biggest floggings North have dished out this decade. Port 2019 for those playing at home. Grim place to be.
The Dees have bounced back in absolute style after their loss to the Dons, which raises more Essendon conversations. We’ll have to give that one as a mulligan, as Melbourne binned the reigning premiers by 2 points on a Sunday special.
At the start of the year I thought this would’ve been a spoon battle, but now it’ll just be a percentage booster for Melbourne.
Hawthorn vs Gold Coast
The Hollywood Hawks nearly lost that title completely if they lost to Port last week. And given how close they were to spilling it, they have lost it in my opinion.
Speaking of almost spilling the beans, the Suns nearly getting done at home by the Dons has raised some eyebrows. Probably the most impenetrable fortress in the AFL, and it nearly got derailed by a serious spoon contender.
Going by the thought that you’re only as good as your last game, and both were ordinary, I thought the Suns have a bit more firepower. Even at the G, I’m tipping the Suns to get back on track.
Essendon vs Collingwood
After last week’s performance, this is the most exciting time Essendon fans have walked into ANZAC Day this decade. After smoking the Dees, the Bombers’ loss to the Suns still showed more positives.
The Pies almost let it slip against the Blues last week, but managed to do what every other team has done and came back from the half-time deficit. So nothing to write home about, except how they are a completely different team with Nick Daicos.
The best game of the year, and it might be early, but they seem to have turned a new leaf and I think the Dons are going to do more than just show up this time around.
Port vs Geelong
Port almost continued their bogey run over the Hawks and would’ve taken a massive scalp, but just couldn’t execute in the end.
And the Cattery made a mockery of the Doggery, with Jezza taking the absolute mick with a double-digit bag, and then carrying on like he won the flag.
As per normal, Geelong continue to bounce back as premiership contenders for parts of the season, and Port have used up their monthly “maybe they’re good” card and will drift back into irrelevance for a few weeks.
Cats comfortably, and let’s all pray for an Irish tagger to piss off Butters so much that he smacks him and decides not to plan on moving there.
Fremantle vs Carlton
Flagmantle continue to plead their case for that name with a strong win over their rivals in the derby. While West Coast are a shadow of what they have been, it’s still a taxing game for the Dockers. But they got the chocolates easily and will enjoy another week in their own beds.
Carlton were the lesser of two evils last week, it seemed, for most neutral viewers, yet still managed to go super Carlton and get overrun in the last, to give everyone our weekly chortle. What’s not a chortle is the fact they let Hollands continue to stay on the ground knowing full well he was unfit. Very silly move from the club that hates scandals, yet seems to always be amongst them.
After an emotionally taxing weekend for the Blues, this is literally the last place they would want to be, and Freo will punish them for it.
St Kilda vs West Coast
The Saints still seem to resemble a polished bowel movement, getting close but just not living up to the hype. They tried to pull off another miracle last week, but they need to show that consistently across a game before anyone takes them seriously. And no, winning this game against the Eagles, even by 70, will not prove anything.
The Eagles went to bed after the first quarter and a half, as expected, and got absolutely flogged in the derby last week in the end. They looked sloppy and disinterested, in what is their grand final until they are back to being the Eagles again.
Couldn’t have picked a better time slot for this game. The Saints comfortably.
Brisbane vs Adelaide
Brisbane seem to be in a similar state to where they were last year, where they are so good that they just kind of expect they will win. And they got caught out heavily last week with this mindset. If they turned it on a few minutes earlier they might have prevailed, but the Dees were too relentless to drop it.
The Crows also have a bit of this disease, and still continue to get through the season shakily. Getting it done by 1 point against the Saints last week in a game at home that shouldn’t have been that close for comfort.
I think last week will be an eye-opener for the Lions, which they seem to receive multiple times a year. They’ll focus on winning instead of tattoos this week.
GWS vs North
The Giants continue their season from hell, with a big touch-up from the Swans which would have hurt, and I hope some footage comes out of Kingsley’s post-game address.
Sitting at 5th on the ladder, North are 100% the odd one out in the top 10 right now. Kudos to what they’ve achieved so far, and the recent execution of the Tiges shows they can beat up the bottom of the ladder the same as their fellow top 10s can, but they’re still yet to beat one of those peers.
While this won’t be the win North need to be taken seriously, it’ll definitely be a step in the right direction for them.
