Dolphins vs Bulldogs
The Dolphins enjoyed their turn on top of the Storm last week, flogging the lowly grand finalists 28-10 and looking far more in control than Melbourne did at any point. They’ve now had a couple of solid weeks where they’ve looked dangerous without needing the game to turn into complete chaos, which is usually a decent sign.
And as a yin to their yang, the Bulldogs were less triumphant on their campaign last week, going down by the same 16-point margin, except they were the ones getting flogged in their hit-out with the Cowboys. Canterbury are starting to wobble a bit now, and after getting rolled again last week, this is the sort of game where you find out pretty quickly whether they’ve got a response in them or not. With back-to-back weeks at Suncorp, I think the Dolphins get the job done again.
Roosters vs Titans
The Roosters are starting to enjoy themselves a bit too much, which is usually bad news for whoever cops them next. They backed up that Dragons hiding with another good win over Brisbane last week, and when they get on a roll like this they can put points on very quickly and make it look pretty casual too.
Gold Coast, on the other hand, did what Gold Coast usually do against decent sides and got handled by Canberra without ever really feeling like they were taking over the game. They’ve got a bit of spark here and there, but they still feel a long way off sticking with a side like the Roosters for a full 80. This one has beat-up written all over it.
Cowboys vs Eels
North Queensland kept their weird little season rolling last week by comfortably handling the Bulldogs. They’re still one of the more volatile sides in the comp, but when they get on top they can put points on in a hurry and make teams look pretty ordinary. At home they’re always a much better watch too.
Parramatta got properly dealt with by the Warriors and looked like a side that just doesn’t cope well once the pressure starts building. They had that little sugar hit a couple of weeks back, but last week felt a lot more like the real Eels again. Up in Townsville, I can’t see that getting any easier for them.
Dragons vs Knights
The Dragons had the bye last week, which probably did them a favour because the week before that the Roosters put 62 on them and treated them like traffic cones. A week off doesn’t suddenly fix a side that still looks completely lost once good teams get on top of them.
Newcastle finally found a pulse again last week and won a proper mad one against Souths. That game was chaos, but for once the Knights were the ones who found a way through it instead of coughing it up. If they bring anything close to that same energy here, the Dragons could be in for another long afternoon.
Rabbitohs vs Sharks
Souths would’ve been filthy after last week. They nearly pinched one from Newcastle after making an absolute mess of the first half, and even though they got beat, there was still enough there to say they’re looking dangerous with ball in hand. They’re just a bit too loose for patches, which is the sort of thing that can drive coaches into early retirement.
Cronulla, on the other hand, got back on track by absolutely belting the Tigers, which is more like what you’d expect from them after that ridiculous Cowboys shootout the week before. This should be a good hit-out, but at home I think Souths have a bit more upside in them, especially if they don’t spend the first half asleep.
Sea Eagles vs Broncos
Manly gave Penrith a proper scare last week and probably walked off thinking they should’ve pinched it. Not many sides push the Panthers that close, so there was still plenty to like there even in the loss. They’ve looked a much better side over the last few weeks and at home they’re never an easy one to knock off.
Brisbane lost to the Roosters, but they still looked dangerous enough in patches and they’ve got a bit more strike in them than Manly when things open right up. This one could go either way, but I don’t mind the Broncos jagging it if it turns into a faster game and the edges open up.
Storm vs Wests Tigers
Melbourne are still an absolute mess. They got done by the Dolphins last week after being flogged by Souths the week before, and right now they just look like a side waiting for something to go wrong. Which is handy, because it usually does. There’s still enough talent there to turn it around, but they’re giving no one much reason to trust them.
The Tigers, meanwhile, got properly put to the sword by Cronulla, which wasn’t ideal after building a bit of momentum the week before. Even so, they’ve shown enough this year to say they can bounce back, and Melbourne are exactly the sort of side to let someone else feel good about themselves at the minute. Bit of a weird one, but I can see Wests sneaking it.
Raiders vs Panthers
Canberra got the job done against the Titans last week, but let’s be honest, that doesn’t exactly make the rest of the comp start shaking. They’ve been better than some of the dregs, sure, but they still don’t look like a side ready to really trouble the top shelf teams unless everything falls their way.
Penrith did what Penrith do again last week, just finding a way to win against Manly even when it wasn’t all smooth sailing. They’re still the benchmark, still deeply annoying, and still the sort of side that usually strangles games once the grind kicks in. Canberra might hang around for a bit at home, but I can’t see the Panthers letting this slip.
