Sharks vs Sea Eagles
Manly got through last week without looking amazing, quite far from it really, but that still says something. They’ve been in good touch, and even when the foot was off the throttle, they still found a way to bank the win. Still, almost dropping it to Gold Coast should be a wake up call.
Cronulla come in off the bye and get this at Shark Park, so this won’t be a soft one. The Sharks should make it physical and awkward, but Manly have looked the more reliable side lately and have enough strike to win the key moments. Especially if they take lesson in last week’s near miss.
Knights vs Eels
Both sides had the week off, so there’s no fresh Round 12 form to note, but recent history suggests the Eels wouldn’t come in as favourites. Plus, the Knights get an extra nod at home.
Parramatta can absolutely make this ugly if they win the middle, but they’re still very hard to trust over 80 minutes. Newcastle have enough strike to take control if the Eels hand them cheap ball or drift through one of their usual flat patches.
Tigers vs Bulldogs
The Bulldogs changed the read a bit last week with a win over the Storm, after 5 straight in the red. They finally showed a bit of bite again and looked far more committed defensively. It wasn’t perfect, but it was the sort of win that can steady a side that had started to wobble badly.
The Tigers had the bye, which helps freshen them up, but it doesn’t fix the usual problem: when momentum turns, they can go from competitive to cooked in a hurry. If the Dogs bring the same edge they had last week, they should grind this out.
Storm vs Roosters
This is one where Origin actually matters. Melbourne were missing several key players last week and looked disjointed because of it, which is not exactly shocking when you pull major pieces out of their system. The loss wasn’t ideal, but it also wasn’t a clean read on their best version.
The Roosters had the bye and should come in fresher, with a cleaner lead-in and enough class to make Melbourne chase the game. AAMI Park keeps the Storm dangerous, because tipping against Melbourne there always feels like touching a hot stove to see if it’s still hot.
The Roosters still look the better placed side.
Broncos vs Dragons
The Dragons were ordinary again last week. They weren’t just beaten, they looked like a side struggling to stay with the pace once the game got moving. That is not ideal preparation for Brisbane at Suncorp, which is less a fixture and more a scheduled inconvenience.
The Broncos had the bye and should have far too much here. Even if the Dragons scrap early, Brisbane’s speed and power should eventually crack them open.
This looks like the clearest mismatch of the round.
Raiders vs Cowboys
Canberra’s Round 12 effort was the worry. At home, after a break, they still looked too easy to open up. That makes this a tough follow-up against a Cowboys side that looked composed and dangerous last week.
North Queensland have been steadier lately, and their attack has enough polish to trouble a Raiders defence that just gave up too many soft looks. Canberra at GIO is never simple, and they’ll drag this into the mud if they can, but the Cowboys look the better side right now.
Panthers vs Warriors
The Warriors are rolling and deserve proper respect here. They handled the Dragons comfortably last week and are playing with real rhythm. This is not one of those lazy “Penrith by default” games, even though every cowardly instinct says Penrith by default.
The Panthers come in off the bye, which usually means they’re fresh enough to squeeze the life out of a game without doing anything too flashy. The Warriors have rhythm, but Penrith have control, patience and the horrible habit of making good teams look rushed late.
Best game of the round, but Panthers still look the safer call.
